What is Mycelium?

Mushroom mycelium is the vegetative growth of a fungus, consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like structures known as hyphae. In the case of mushroom-forming fungi, the mycelium is responsible for colonizing and decomposing organic matter, and is the source of energy and nutrients that the mushroom uses to produce its fruiting body.

Mycelium is the primary means of reproduction for most fungi, as it produces spores that can develop into new mycelium or, in the case of mushroom-forming fungi, into new fruiting bodies. In the cultivation of mushrooms, the mycelium is often grown on a nutrient-rich substrate, such as grain or compost, and used to inoculate a secondary substrate where the fruiting bodies will develop.

What is substrate?

Mushroom substrate refers to the material that is used as a growing medium for the production of mushrooms. It provides the necessary nutrients, moisture, and structure for the fungus to grow and develop. The substrate can vary depending on the type of mushroom being grown, but it often includes ingredients such as grain, compost, sawdust, or other organic materials. Some common substrates used for growing psychedelic mushrooms include rye grain, millet, and brown rice flour.
